Good Kniight (Commodore 64) Review
A quarter from back then works out to about 80 cents now. Let that sink in.
So is there a version of space harrier for the Nintendo switch that is same as the original arcade with the original music/theme track? As I’ve watched several videos on UA-cam now and they’ve not had the music I loved so much as a kid. Thanks for any replies in advance ✌🏻
Yes its the same as the arcade , part of the Sega Ages series Space Harrier release .
Bastich, thanks for your excellent research and presentation of these classic games. Champions of Krynn and Pool of Radiance were the first and still remain my favourites and gave me and my friends countless hours of fun. I need to mention that Secret of the Silver Blades wasn't as bad as it's reviews. It was definitely not a weak game and was probably underrated due to the flood of releases.
Thx for watching , yeah I dont think Silver is bad its definitely not my favorite for sure but its a fine addition never the less . Just wanted to give an alternate perspective to whatever I said .
@@BastichB64K I remember Silver took a bit to unfold it's story, especially the first hours were quite full of just battle, once past that point, it was just as good as the other games. Reviews weren't so good, neither in the US nor in Europe. I miss the SSI RPGs.
What a great collection! In addition to the obvious excellent sound qualities, the visual layer is also of the highest quality! Thanks!
Thx , nobody ever seems to put any effort in when they make one of these sid collections .. its usually just one still shot and music , just wanted it too have some decent production values
Hey B Man! Thanks for the nice in depth look into the Zaxxon series. I always liked the look of Zaxxon but absolutely sucked at the game. But that didn't stop me from playing it every time I want to the arcade. Never really improved on playing the game. Guess I just didn't play it enough. Anyway thanks for the great work you do. Keep it up buddy!!! 😁
Cheers , its a fun series once you get the height sorted with a bit of practice . Thx for watching 🕹️
I have found memories of spending time with my dad and our C-128 (almost always in c-64 mode). It's heartwarming to see the relationship you two have sharing retro gaming. Brings back great memories of my dad.
Cheers thank you , much appreciated
Hey B Man! Thanks for this Awesome Doco. This brought back some great memories of my childhood spent in the arcades. My favorites ard Pacland And Pacmania. Absolutely love the isometric view of Pacmania and having a jump brought in a whole new mechanic for the series. So Much Fun!!! Thanks again for all the hard work you put in just to keep us entertained. Loving the channel! YOU ROCK MATE!!! 😁
My pleasure, Pacmania is very cool on the C64 and the arcade 🕹️👍👍
this looks fantastic,
Its a very cool game 🕹️👍
@@BastichB64K some of these types of c64 games can be difficult to get into but this looks like it could be picked up easily.
@@MephProduction yeah it is pretty easy to play
I knew you were gonna say monty!! [99% in zzap 64!]
Its an epic tune 🎶🎶🎶
@BastichB64K truly. Cos I'm from Sheffield, and used to frequent Just Micro as a kid in the 80s, I got to see a work in progress of Monty on the Run before release. The shop was packed! Shoulder to shoulder. I don't remember it having the music at that stage, but it was cool to be a part of it though. I _think_ Gremlin had something to do with the store - they were office was literally just a few doors up on Carver Street
@@NickTaylor-Phantom-Works2 pretty cool story 👍👍
I love that you included the Dungeon Masters Assistant releases, those two are an interesting addition to the range. It was Curse of the Azure Bonds I played most, and like you I had the official Clue Book filled with helpful maps and tips. I must admit I didn't play much of Pool of Radiance. I wasn't keen on Heroes of the Lance although I had recently read the book it was based on at the time; it felt pretty clunky and difficult to control - the graphics were not particularly good. The price tag for second-hand games really puts me off adding more to my collection though.
I figured nobody ever mentions the Dungeon Master Assistants ever and I wanted to be thorough. Heroes is chunky , its not great but with a manual it's not too bad once you know what is going on , definitely not a high point though .
Champions of Krynn was the first game I ever beat on my own; RPG or otherwise. I still go back regularly to the Gold Box games, though I tend to skip Pool of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds due to their somewhat rougher edges to the UI (no fix!). I also stick with the DOS versions for convenience, as they're long enough without the hour long load times and disk swapping of the good old Commodore 64. They still have some of the best combat of any RPG from their era. They did have the problem with the AD&D 1E ruleset, incidentally enough. They were too faithful, with the racial level limits basically killing demihumans from being viable in the later titles, at least in the Forgotten Realms titles. The Dragonlance titles were somewhat better, due to a much relaxed racial level limitations. The Elves could level with no cap as Ranger, Cleric, or Mage, with Qualinesti able to have unlimited Thief as well. Half-Elves could go Cleric or Thief unlimited. Dwarves at least can level fighter an unlimited amount of times. It's telling that most of the later AD&D titles by SSI and others; Dark Sun, Eye of the Beholder, etc... did away with the racial level limits. Even though AD&D 2E retained them, even in the later revised version.
Thx for your insight and info , I played the easyflash C64 versions for this video or else the video would never have been made with that amount of loading 🤣👍👍
@@BastichB64K At least you could have read a few dozen books while loading.
@@drg5352 🤣👍👍👍
Hell, yeah, bro!
🎶🎶😀
never played monty on the run but i have the song cover by the fastloaders in my usual playlist. Hell of a tune.
Fastloaders version is freaking awesome 🎶🎶🎶🎶✅
Are you made of yellow felt and do you drive a van?
Sure
Lovely!
Thx for watching
His ONE MAN AND HIS DROID and of course COMMANDO music is just fantastic. Great musician who had the best idol with Jean-Michel Jarre, and used the ideas he got from listening jarres music to create own legendary music
😀🎶👍👍👍
Awesome docu B....congrats with that I enjoyed it!
Cheers thank you 😀👍👍👍
Agree! I love his music! Favourite is International karate.
Good choice 🎶🎶👍
Naaah's!!!!!!!
🤣👍
Great job on this one. I really enjoyed the SSI history at the beginning and how they beat out EA for the license a bit further in.
It's more satisfying thinking they beat EA in a modern sense but I'd love to have seen what EA had planned ... They were pretty awesome during that time although SSI knocked it outta the park ✅
@@BastichB64K Definitely. EA was a much different company in those days. I loved the old animated logo the would appear while the C64 games were loading.
4:22 what's that awesome tune dude? Thanks for the video 😊👍🏼
Sorry im at work at the mo but all the tunes used are in the end credits , all C64 and PC-98 music
It's from the PC Engine game Dungeon Explorer, the track was Dungeon 3, you can find the full soundtrack on UA-cam. Great tunes!
@@yaroombabilly it's indeed a great soundtrack, thanks my dude 👍🏼
Monty On The Run is still one of the greatest instrumental tracks that I have heard in my life. And that comes from a Zappa fan. Nice video Mr B, as always...
That track is sooooo good 🎶🎶🎶👍
I'm a huge fan of Rob Hubbard, I loved his music back in the 1980s and I've had the privilege of meeting him in recent years. That was incredibly special to me. And I've been helping behind the scenes on this new book, with proofreading and fact-checking - I guarantee Rob Hubbard fans are going to love it! The detail is amazing, pinpointing the exact order he wrote tunes in, how his player routine developed over time, and how he went on from the C64 to other machines. While a lot of people associate chiptune with the NES, for me it will always be the SID chip and maestros like Rob that defined how chiptune should sound. My favourite track has to be Master of Magic itself, superbly suited to the game and helping generate an incredible atmosphere.
Awesome ,v I got the PDF but I've held off reading it that way as its just not my thing but looking briefly at it is impressive . Good job cant wait for the physical
i never forget when i recorded robs (and others ofcourse) .sids over the tv speaker to my audio cassettes❤
I think we all did that 🤣👍
Great tribute to Rob. What a legend he is
🎶🎶👍
Amazing!
😀👍
Being born in -64, bought my first synthesizer in -83 and my first C-64 in -84. Still love SID music and the games. So, of course I pre-ordered this. :) While writing this your vid "Wired For Sound Compilation #1" is in the background.
Nice a trifecta of a SID sounding day 🎶🎶
I saw this and first thought: "I need a fresh bag of potato chips."
🤣👍 enjoy
I still have my gold box Pool of Radiance, the 5.25 disks, decoder wheel, manual, even the registration papers. It all survived. What a perfect AD&D adaptation!
Yeah truly epic
I think the only c64 SSI games I did NOT have was Dragons of Flame, War of the Lance, Dragonstrike, and Dungeon Masters Assistant vol II Characters & Treasures. I loved DMG vol I but never saw these other titles in the store. I remember buying Gateway to the Sacage Frontier and Death Knights of Krynn at the same store the same day as I had forgotten their releases. The store closed at the end of that year. The amiga 500 allowed me to continue playing various games and the PC finished it. EOB I is still bedt on amiga for getting the ending and i curse PC for booting me direct to DOS.. boo!
Most of these never came to any software shops for me had to get the real physicals way later
I remember Cloudy Mountain and Treasure of Tarmin, my introductions to AD&D, playing them both for years as a kid. When we got Pool of Radiance I noticed I wasn't a huge fan of it, but Curse of the Azure Bonds and Secret of the Silver Blades got me hyped. Then, the Krynn games... oh my god I loved that trilogy. Death Knights, Champions, Dark Queen... masterpieces each. For me, of course, I know not everyone feels the same way. It's like Buck Rodgers: Countdown to Doomsday - I loved it, not everyone did, and that's okay. I miss SSI so much. They were legendary and should have survived the 90s but... sadly...
Curse is one of the best Gold box releases . But my fav out if all of the TSR games was Buck Rodgers and Countdown to Doomsday , its was simply the coolest!!
@@BastichB64K Hopefully you'll fuel up the Maelstrom Rider once again and go on another grand tour of the solar system in an upcoming future episode! I know I'd love to see it.
@@TheBeardedFrogSage ill probably cover it in a future episode of Tales of a Dungeon basher ✅
Master of Magic for me. Sublime. Amazing. Gorgeous sonics. A well named book.
Nice one 👍
Zoids, international Karate, Master of Magic, Commando and so many more... I recorded them all on a tape back in the good old days and listened to them on my Walkman so many hours... I still have the tape with a drawn cover but the sound quality vanished from year to year☹️. At least I have all of the songs as MP3 files... But it was way cooler to listen to them on a good Sony Walkman...
Yeah I wish i still had my walkman as well , I remember when discman came out and I just tossed the old walkman aside 😭😭😭 what a moron 🤣🤣
feel a bit bad for you being a youngster at the time since a bunch of these games were based on books. i didn't start reading until i was in high school and this was the perfect time for rpg games on my end. graduating in 1989 i had already read the books for these and had an edge... but they were still really hard
The video intro is just what I used to do back then my age was about 13 in 88 my daughter was just acting as me there and shes only 8 now ... Its basically the idea of it 👍👍
man those games were frustrating with the overwhelming amount of misses i always got. those games were hard. i ended up getting secret of the silver blades for the amiga and regretted it because i didn't read that you could carry the characters over from the previous games. so i had to go back and buy the c64 version... unfortunately, i couldn't find it for a long time.
Yeah for both the Dragonlance games and Forgotten Realms ones you could import your characters , such a cool idea
The C64 Commando music slaps HARD to this very day. I'd play those 4 levels over and over😅
Its truly does 😎🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶👍
While I'm quite nostalgic for these games, playing them today you REALLY have to be in a certain mindset to get through them. They're so unfriendly to the player. I really suggest Gold Box Companion if you do, as it helps immensely. Great games for the most part, though.
Playing the easyflash versions that are available now on real hardware or emu is the way to go it eliminates 90% of the loading and zero disk swapping . They are not as brutal in terms of difficulty as i remember..... The battles take a looooooooong time though
First Hubbard tune that blew me away was Delta. I was like OMG!!! is that really the C64! also a game I loaded just for the music? Zoids!
Delta is pretty epic for sure 🎶🎶👍
Delta and Zoids 100%
Delta is copy of Phillip Glass.
He lived not far from me in the UK, North East England.
😀👍👍
How faithful is the NES pool of radiance compared to the c64's?
Its not faithful at all , theres so much missing its definitely to be avoided
Creating a character called Sean Bean sounds like you're dooming him from the start :-P
He died first ... As expected 😂
Brought a signed copy, had to have Rob sign this book of gold and what a magical book it is. I'm like you, I grew up in exactly the same era. His tracks literally blew me away to the point I'd buy a game based on his music alone, W.A.R by Martech was one of these, this track is my favourite by him. I can only hope there's more books to come highlighting the work of Tim Follin, Martin Galway and Jeroen Tel. Best thing I'll buy this year.
Yeah i cant wait to get the physical version and lets hope the other SID masters get the same treatment
😋 Rob Is A God
A fair assessment 😀👍
your channel is awesome love your videos, Skaald is a new game that is heavily influenced by C64 CRPGs
Thx dude , yeah I really wanna play that it looks awesome
Haha, such a recognizable intro. I also went out of bed at around 5 in the morning to play games at my C64 back then. Get some quality time before school.
I figured other people would have done the same thing 🤣👍 good times
Why don’t Steam and GOG sell physical envelopes with the old box art and containing printed manuals and goodies…that would be awesome
It would be awesome to get rereleased physicals of these
That was brilliant - some of my favourite games from the C64 era. Epic editing btw!
Thank you sir much appreciated
Thanks bashB!
My pleasure thank you for watching
